Summer Modelling Practice

I haven't posted since the end of the semester, I've been reading through the course blogs, but neglecting my own. I'll start off by posting a few images of the most recent scene I've been working on for Modelling / Texturing practice. It is based on a digital painting by a French Concept Artist over on the Concept Art forum (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=174898). The shot is a imagining of 'Kings Landing' from George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' novels. I thought it had a great composition, which showed the expansive city as well as some close-up detail. I decided to aim for a still render, with a lot of detail involved.

The area is blocked out and some detail has been added. I've been teaching myself Mudbox recently, which has only been used to Normal-Map the Archway bricks at this point, but I'll be Normal-mapping the rest as I go along. The real difficulty will be in the texturing, getting the right balance of detail and style. The lighting is also going to take some thought.

Edit: Still texturing:

The Original Concept Piece:

I'll continue to work on this and post updates. I'm not sure how exact I'll be keeping to the reference yet, but I'm hoping to not stray too far. I'm also in the process of more researching and soon-to-be drafting my Dissertation.
